Coenties Slip, a street in the Financial District of lower Manhattan, became a hotbed of artistic activity in the 1950s and ’60s, playing host to a fluid group of artists who would make significant contributions to their fields. This publication focuses on artists Robert Indiana, Agnes Martin, James Rosenquist, and Jack Youngerman, who lived and worked in Coenties Slip lofts between 1956 and 1967, to illuminate this singular community. Presenting color images of each artist’s work alongside archival photographs, Coenties Slip also includes an essay by Mildred Glimcher.
