Produced on the occasion of Pace’s New York survey Wifredo Lam: The Imagination at Work, this book examines the formal and thematic complexities of Wifredo Lam’s paintings and sculptures.

Foregrounding the radical nature of the Cuban artist’s syncretic visual language, the publication traces the evolution of his practice and the ways he challenged the Eurocentricity of Modernism.

A foreword by art historian Alexander Alberro along with essays by art historians Kaira M. Cabañas and Samantha A. Noël and writer Alexandra Chang offer contemporary analyses of the work of a dynamic 20th century figure, shedding light on the social and political contexts in which Lam created his art, as well as the cultural and religious sources that informed his practice. In addition to images of Lam’s paintings, works on paper, and rarely seen bronze sculptures, the publication features a detailed chronology of the artist’s life written by Latin American art scholar and curator Michaëla de Lacaze Mohrmann, who made curatorial contributions to Pace’s exhibition.

Wifredo Lam

Born in Cuba to a Chinese father and Congolese-Iberian mother, Wifredo Lam is widely considered one of the greatest artists of the 20th century. Having trained in Spain and France in the early years of his career, the artist became lifelong friends and associates with major figures of the European avant-garde, including Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, and Georges Braque. His work was in dialogue with key surrealist and cubist artists and, over the course of his life, Lam transformed modernist painting through his unique cross-cultural hybridization of art.
